Hi,
I didn't realise until recently what Guarnere meant when he referred to Winters as a Quaker? I thought it was some kind of yankie slang for a coward or something such like and thought nothing more of it.
Now the light bulb flashed one day when I was watching the New Yankee Workshop, as I have done many times. Norm the master carpenter frequently does a lot of old quaker style furniture reproductions, again that I'd seen lots of times before and never twigged.
I put two and two together and bingo: Quakers! the old American religious society folk that live strict lifestyles (like homish folk...sorry if its spelt wrong) hence Winters doesn't drink or smoke and hence Quaker.
I Thought I knew and understood all of BoB but I'm still picking up new stuff even now such a long time since its first airing on TV (brilliant). This was probably obvious to any Americans on this forum and anyone with any knowledge of US history etc. I bet their are even some (probably brits) that also didn't catch on.
Let us know if thats you.
Just a bit of trivia in the uk you can get Quaker Porridge Oats, there logo is an old Quaker man with there typical style black hat.

Hi Folks,
Steve, the origins of the Quakers are from C.17th England and not that far from your neck of the woods. They were an indirect result of the religious termoil brought on by the times, such as the English Civil War. Many fled to the New World to escape religious persecution when central governments sought to re-establish standardised worship.
I used to have neighbours who were quakers. They were a very nice bunch. We used to converse for hours and I used to tag along to some of the meetings. There I met even more nice folks. Open, polite, respectful and wise. Very supportive and not the least critical. If I remember my studies rightly, the Quakers had a good track record in their dealings with the Native Americans. I can see why they're called the "Society of Friends".
Regards, Jonathan.

hi,
I never asked before because i didn't give it that much thought, but now i know ha ha ha, what a tit i feel, theirs a term some use here in Blighty (Britain) that is said to someone who's scared, "quaking in ya boots" i think thats how i came to my incorrect understanding of a quaker? LOL.
Interesting about the origins of quakers although i suppose if you thought about it a bit it might seem sort of logical.

Steve you asked if anyone hadn't received any new post lately, well I have not received any for over two weeks! I am most upset about this and have tried everything to restore my mail from the site but to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas to help me? It would be much appreciated. I have not been on the site long but I love all the chat and everyones veiws and of course I'm a huge B.O.B. fan.
