Hi all,

Dark Blue World.

“Czechoslovakia 1939, the dawn of World War, two pilots must leave their homeland in order to save it and fly again for England. Brothers in arms on a mission that will test their courage, their friendship and their love. A powerful film about patriotism and passion in the skies above.

During World War II hundreds of Czechoslovak pilots fought with the British against the Nazis. After the War the Communists seized power in Czechoslovakia and jailed the pilots who had returned home. They feared these heroes would once again fight for freedom.

By the year 1951 all the Czechoslovak RAF airmen were released from the labour camps. But remained outcasts for most of their lives. It was only in 1991 that the survivors were rehabilitated and recognised for their wartime service.

This is great film and must be seen, I don't usually like foreign films and only a handful I would bother watching but this is very good indeed. It's in Czechoslovakian but I used the English subtitles feature on my DVD player. Must see film.

Kind regards

Steve Stallebrass

Heard about Tears of the Sun and they say it's good. It may not be about Airborne but it's about the Navy, still during WW2. Bruce Willis stars in it.

Nope, I'll have to check it out when I venture to the cinema.

I'll tell you one film that is an absolute must see film, Matrix Reloaded. From what I have seen in trailers, it looks fantastic.

and by the way thanks for your review of Dark Blue World Steve. I've always been thinking of purchasing the film, but I think I will be getting it now on DVD, along with Road to Perdition which is out tommorow :)

I recently watched "Dark Blue World" and I found it to be a worthy account and production of a tale that should be told. Superb. There must be a myriad of stories to be told of what happened to those gallant service personnel who returned home to Eastern Europe after the war, only to be betrayed by those at either end of the journey. As far as I'm concerned, the British Government at the time had blood on it's hands for some of that.

I've also purchased "The Longest Day" on DVD. The return to Normandy in 1968 documentary was quaint
("Pegaysus Bridge") or innacurate (Bradley was C in C of the landings???) but it was visually stunning and for that, well worth watching. Incidentally, I cannot recall another film ever, that had gathered such an illustrious all star cast to participate. I dread to think what such a cast would cost to hire in todays standards!

Regards, Jonathan.

I'd recommend "To End All Wars". Based on the book by Ernest Gordon, this movie portrays the lives of a group of POWs who constructed the Death Railway in Thailand. The graphics are really good and the storyline is very thought-provoking.

For anyone who is Canadian, or if you are just interested, I would recommend "Victory from Above: The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion"

I think you got the wrong movie marigold. Tears of the sun is not WWII. Harts war is the bruce willis movie that takes place in WWII.

Hiya Warren,

I'd like to know more about "Victory from Above", please? Is it a film or documentary? Is it out on DVD? I'm seriously interested in getting my hands on this.

Regards, Jonathan.

"Victory from Above" is a documentary. When Global was airing Band of Brothers in Canada they had little exerpts of veterans from the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion speak of their experiences in the same fashion of how Band of Brothers began. It is out on DVD and the last I heard is that it was being sold at Wal-Mart (since they were raising donations for the Juno Beach center in Normandy).

Many thanks for your help, Tim.

I'll have a scout for it on the net and hope that it's not just out on Region 1.

Cheers, Jonathan.
