HBO's expensive World War II drama tries to maintain audience after attacks
NEW YORK (AP) -- The audience for HBO's expensive Band of Brothers miniseries dropped after last month's terrorist attacks but shows signs of leveling off.
The 10-part series, a World War II saga created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, was HBO's most expensive series ever at a cost of $120 million. It began with much fanfare and strong ratings in back-to-back episodes Sept. 9, two days before the attacks.
Those first two episodes drew an average of 10 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Following the attacks, HBO immediately stopped all advertising and promotion for the series. The second week's episode drew 7.3 million viewers, Nielsen said.
Two subsequent installments had 6.3 million and 6.1 million viewers.
Ratings for new shows typically drop after a premiere. HBO spokeswoman Tobe Becker said the network is "extremely pleased" with the ratings given the competition with the new fall season on broadcast networks and the lack of promotion.
The ratings are on a par with HBO series like Sex and the City and Six Feet Under, while lower than The Sopranos.
A pay cable service, HBO depends on subscribers for revenue instead of advertising, and has about 27 million subscribers. It generates subscribers largely through positive word of mouth about its series.
