A bill in the California Assembly to rename a section of Highway 101 the "Screaming Eagles Highway"

Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 54--Relative to the Screaming Eagles Highway.


LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


ACR 54, as introduced, Strickland. Screaming Eagles Highway: 101st Airborne Division.
This measure would designate the section of State Highway Route 101 in the County of Ventura as the Screaming Eagles Highway.
The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the costs of appropriate plaques and markers showing this designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect appropriate plaques and markers.
Fiscal committee: yes.


WHEREAS, State Highway Route 1O1 is a north-south highway, spanning most of California, from the United States-Mexican border up through Oregon; and
WHEREAS, A portion of State Highway Route 101 passes through the County of Ventura; and
WHEREAS, State Highway Route 101 has a strong significance for the military personnel of the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles, who travel on the highway, as the route number reminds the personnel of their experiences during any one of the wars that they participated in; and
WHEREAS, The State of California has the largest United States veteran population in the nation, comprised of some 3.3 million armed services veterans and representing 12.3 percent of the nationwide veteran population of nearly 27 million; and
WHEREAS, The 101st Airborne Division traces its lineage to World War I with the formation of the 101st Division on July 23, 1918, and subsequently has been involved in every major war that the United States has participated in since then; and
WHEREAS, The 101st Airborne Division was instrumental in the success of the D-Day Invasion, in the Operation Market Garden in Holland, in Bastogne for the Battle of the Bulge, in Vietnam for Operation Nevada Eagle, and in many other courageous missions
worldwide; and
WHEREAS, It is fitting and proper that State Highway Route 101 in the County of Ventura be designated the Screaming Eagles Highway;
now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates that portion of State Highway Route 101 located in the County of Ventura as the Screaming Eagles Highway; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate plaques and markers, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing these special designations, and upon receiving donations from
nonstate sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those plaques and markers; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and the author for appropriate distribution.

That is such a cool idea. As a citizen of the UK, I am powerless in influencing the US government, but i'm sure are American members will let there feelings be known on the the subject.
