Matthew Settle as Spiers

Easy Company Medic Eugene Roe: The Mini Series: The Cast and Crew: Cast: Matthew Settle as Spiers
At age 19, Matthew Settle moved to New York City and joined a rock band. When his lack of musical talent eventually forced him to rethink his career, he chose to become an actor. Numerous drama classes, failed pilots, and television films later, this Johnny-come-lately to the movie business landed his first high-profile role as the oldest principal cast member in the teen scream flick I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998). He was almost 29 years old.
Born on September 17, 1969, in Hickory, NC, Settle is the youngest of two girls and four boys. In 1983, his father, a Baptist preacher, and his mother, a church organist, relocated the family to Sevierville, TN. Settle sold records at Dolly Parton's nearby theme park, Dollywood, before deciding to become a musician himself. After getting kicked out of his New York-based rock group, he hawked meat and seafood off a truck on Long Island before Jay Julian, Robert De Niro's lawyer, got him into acting school. Settle borrowed money from friends to afford the classes, and then moved out to Los Angeles to begin his career.

Settle made his small-screen debut opposite Sarah Paulson as an Irish-American settler in the 1996 CBS pilot Shaughnesy. He went on to portray a frat boy in the movie of the week What Happened to Bobby Earl? (1997) with Kate Jackson and Kristian Alfonso, land a small role in the television film Murder in Mind (1997) with Ellen Burstyn and Kristin Davis, and play Green Lantern in the pilot for Justice League of America (1997) with David Ogden Stiers and Miguel Ferrer. In 1998, Settle graduated to feature films when he starred as Jennifer Love Hewitt's deceptively perfect college boyfriend in the thriller I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, the much-hyped sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). After a brief return to television to play a young Bugsy Siegel in the Emmy-nominated HBO biopic Lansky (1998) and real-life teenage rapist Alex Kelly in the CBS television film Crime in Connecticut: The Story of Alex Kelly (1999), Settle joined Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey, and Harvey Keitel in the cast of the World War II submarine film U-571 (2000).

Settle's next two films, The In Crowd (2000) and Attraction (2000), were psychosexual thrillers that failed both critically and commercially. In fact, after a disappointing premiere at the 2000 Toronto Film Festival, Attraction went straight to video. Yet, Settle's work in U-571 helped him join David Schwimmer, Ron Livingston, and Donnie Wahlberg as the officers of Easy Company in HBO's unforgettable World War II miniseries Band of Brothers. Executive-produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the series earned unprecedented acclaim and garnered numerous awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Miniseries.

After returning home from Band of Brothers' European shoot, Settle began taking fencing instruction, sailing classes, and tap-dancing lessons in an effort to widen his skills as actor. He landed a guest-starring role on five episodes of NBC's ER as Brian Westlake, the abusive young husband of Maura Tierney's next-door neighbor. Shortly after his ER stint ended, Settle appeared as Ashley Judd's love interest in Callie Khouri's Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002), which also featured Sandra Bullock, Ellen Burstyn, James Garner, and Maggie Smith.

No stranger to the theater, Settle has also performed on-stage in productions of Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park, Eugene O'Neill's Beyond the Horizon, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and Anton Chekov's The Seagull. ~ Aubry Anne D'Arminio, All Movie Guide

Bio:
This handsome dark-haired actor with boy-next-door charm was a relatively late entrant to show business. Matthew Settle had originally moved to Manhattan as a 19-year-old aspiring rock musician but after being fired from his band, turned to acting. He was in his late twenties when he played a spate of teenage roles in several TV-movies (e.g., What Happened to Bobby Earl?) and when he finally made his big screen debut as a college student friend of Jennifer Love Hewitt's stalked Julie who accompanies her on a resort vacation turned deadly in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998). He went on to co-star as a newlywed ensign assigned to a dangerous mission in the WWII thriller U-571 and a dashing tennis pro and member of The In Crowd (both 2000).

From a post on the Settle fan club, which was taken from a local newspaper...

Q: I am very impressed with Matthew Settle, who portrays Lt. Spiers in HBO's Band of Brothers. Any info on him would be appreciated.

A: Settle, who turned 32 on Sept. 17, is a native of Hickory, N.C., and the son of a Baptist minister currently based in Tennessee. At 19, he moved to New York and worked odd jobs while studying acting, then eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he made his acting debut in "Shaughnessy," a 1996 TV pilot that went nowhere. Settle really clicked as a young man with a sinister secret in the 1998 horror sequel "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer," followed by a well-recieved performance as young Bugsy Siegel in the 1999 TV movie "Lansky." His work in the films "U-571" and "The in Crowd" boosted his profile even higher, leading to his "Band" gig. Coming up: the movie thriller "Final Guardian" and the big screen adaptation of the literary best seller "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood."

I agree, Gold:) I'm just curious, did he really do these things that we heard in "the breaking point"? Did he really kill that own man because of drinking, and these twenty(?) germans after giving cigarette?

Iines,
No one knows for sure what exactly happened on D-Day except for Captain Speirs. He never talked with Stephen Ambrose when he was writing the book, so the series took some liberties & showed us that it might have happened but it also told us that the other soldiers told many different stories regarding Captain Speirs. He was a tough & mean SOB which he wanted the soldiers to think of him. Of course when he was given command of Easy, I believe alot of the men began to get to know him & understand that he was a great leader, the stories did not matter. If he did shoot the prisoners, I don't think we should judge him for his actions. We were not there during the war & you don't know what you would do if you were in this situation. I say that Speirs was a great leader & leave it at that.

Need i say more Iines? Melissa took the words outta my mouth. I agree with Melissa, i don't know and care if any of those stories are true. The men of E respects him and knows he's a great leader and that's all there is to it. :)

I'm new to this, but i have a deep admiration for the men, past and present, of Easy Co.
i think that Mr Settle did a fantastic job. At first his character was kind of mysterious and the men seemed wary of him, but as time went on he became more warm towards the men, and in turn they respected him. By the end of the series, i was totally in awe of Mr Settle, and his portrayal meant that i wanted to know more about Speirs. The whole series is heartbreaking, and makes you realise how lucky we are that men like this fought so that we could live in the world we do today.

Hi everyone,
I was reading in the book where Lt.Meehan gave an order before the jump not to take any prisoners once they were over there. Also there is a piece near the end where they talk about the rumor of Lt.Speirs offering the Germans spme smokes, even offering them a light before he shoots them. I have left a message before where any Airborne troops wherever they land air only capable of sustaining a battle for so long. In the case of Easy Co., they had no idea whether the landings on D-DAY were going to be successful or not, and if they weren't, what would you do with a bunch of prisoners anyway. Because once you take them prisoner you are responsible for their well being and a whole lot more, according to the Geneva Convention. Also because the Airborne was scattered all over the place, British, Canadian, and American, you cannot by any means spare soldiers to watch over them. So the best thing to do is , and this may sound cruel to some, is don't take any.
Hope everyone is well.
Steve L.
P.S. Iines, I tried to send you an E-mail but it said your address was no longer valid. If you could , E-mail me your valid one, thanks. I

Speirs was SUCH a hero, i think Metthew played his roll well. I have to agree with Iines, the part when Speirs ran through all those Germans to send out a message to other groups in eps 7, was SO amazing, he is a real hero...!

I spotted Matthew on ER the other day. He played the husband of Abby's neighbour who was being physically abused by the husband and when Abby tried to help he beat the be-jayus out of her. Nobody on his other sites has spotted it. Yeah for me! It's probably because we have a special connection due to the fact that we share the same birthday!!:>

I think Matthew did his homework pretty well before taking the scenes. First, he looked great. Not everyone has "the look" of an officer at the battlefield. He has it. Great casting. Also his voice was great. Remember when they did lottery to send one to home. He basically lead the celemony and his voice was just like a real officer, Maybe better than some of the real officers out there. In the last episode, he calls up the guy in baseball game. That voice is the must have to the officers. I am very happy with Settle's acting. He is not just a pretty face. He really pulled it off.

olivia! yeah! i seen that eppy, too! i saw the part with Luka and Matthew in the bar. It's one of the best scenes I saw on ER. I give props to Goran Visnjic and Matthew for acting good in that scene. :P

I dunno if anyone posted this one yet, but Matthew Settle also guest starred in The Practice. He starred in two eppies. The first part was titled "Choir Boys" but I forgot the title of the 2nd part.

I also saw him on The Ya-Ya Sisters movie hehe. He really looks good in a uniform hehe. :P
