Episode Four - "Replacements"

Easy Company Medic Eugene Roe: The Mini Series: Episode Four - "Replacements"
Written by Graham Yost / Bruce C. McKenna and Directed by David Nutter

Due to heavy casualties, a group of fresh paratrooper replacements joins Easy Co. in time for a massive drop into German-occupied Holland for Operation Market-Garden. While met with no resistance in Eindhoven, Easy and a cluster of British tanks are repelled from a nearby town by a superior German force, sustaining many casualties as they retreat. The Allied plan to enter Germany through Holland and end the war before Christmas fails.

(Authentic C47's and Sherman tanks were used in this)

This was EXCELLENT. It was watching this one last night when I realised what is so different about Band of Brothers. It's the sound of the bullets thudding into the ground. That makes it so....like...shit, this really happened!!

Scarey stuff.

Hi,

I may have gotten all wrong but it seemed to me the GIs were talking german to the dutch man and kid. Do you think that was a mistake from the director ? Weren't they due to talk to them in dutch ?
Anyway it wasn't aired in english here, so maybe it was a translation mistake !
Does anyone have an explanation for that point ?
Aline.

The GI, Webster, first was talking german to the dutch man, because he didnt know he was a dutch guy. Then he asked if he spoke english and the continued in english

This is an explanation, but's it's not very rational since they were in Holland so they should have expected to be speaking to a dutch man and since Van Klinken spoke dutch (i presume) he could have talk to them...at least it made me practise my german...

no he didnot say anything untill webster asked him if he spoke english. The dutch guy could expect that they were US G.I. 's but he was kind of confused i think

also maybe webster knew that in 1944, far more people in holland spoke german than there were people who spoke english....?!

ilja, do you have epi 4 on tape? i don't but because i presume you're dutch you should clarify things for aline about wether who's speaking dutch/german/english first and if it is translated well....?! i would love to do that, but i haven't got it on tape...

BTW
i love this scene where webster gives the dutch kiddo his hershey bar! :) the smiles of both of them!

**also, Webster's book, "Parachute Infantry" is being re-released, October time I think, with 80 new pages, it is truely a wonderful book to read, and I'm really looking forward to the new version. Another book that you might like to find is by Forrest Guth 'The way we Were' which was released earlier this year, and I was lucky enough to buy it in Ste Mere Eglise when I was over for the 58th Anniversary, and some of his artefacts that appear in his book were on show (by the way, my copy is written in BOTH English & French!!)

Best Wishes, Jane, in Southern England

Webster starts in german en then the dutch guy replies in german. He says: "Niederlande, Niederlande" Then webster asked if he speaks english and they continue in english

Does anyone know anything about the Replacement in this episode. He looks Mexican. When they are telling "The Night Of The Bayonet", he speaks up. When Bull is lost in Market Garden he is the only replacement that volunteers.

Michael, do you mean Douglas Spain who plays Tony Garcia?
They cut the women's hair who slept with the germans. It's their some sort of punishment.

Hi everyone,
Michael, there is a book written by a Canadian Vet called "Not In Vain" and it shows pictures of the battlefields and cities then and now. One part of it also shows women who lived in the city of Caen having their heads shaved as well for having German soldiers as lovers.
Hope this helps,
Steve.

This might sound a little ignorant, but does anyone know which lieutenant is asking Martin to tap his leg when the jump light goes green (it was in the scene when EZ were readying to jump into Holland)? I don't know who he is and after watching it over and over and over, I still don't know.

LOL! I don't think he was color blind Amy. I think he asked Martin to do that because he knows he'll be too scared to recognize or remeber that it's time to jump? ;)

No offense, that that doesn't really make much sense to me. The only way he would have had to ask Martin to tell him would be if he couldn't actually tell which light was red and which light was green. But then, you have to look at it in light of when exactly Martin has to tap his leg; when they have to "hook up" or when they just jump out. Hooking up would make sure sense in terms of importance of the light colour....hmmmm.....Oh, well. I hope that my rambling made sense. And thanks Gold.

has anybody else spotted "Babe" Heffron in this episode. I thought i was seeing things at first but i have seen a still since. its just before the girl gets her head shaved by the dutch residents of eindhoven. Its very quick so get the stop or pause buttons ready.

I suppose Gold saw it before any body else and could also quote "her version" of the script if there was any !!!

I noticed this too. I just was watching part IV, and noticed at 20:21 on the timer that Babe Heffron is in it. He is an extra playing one of the citizens of Eindhoven. You can see him just as the men are working through the town looking for Talbert.
