I only just got round to watching episode 8. It's gotton to the point now where I have to take drops of Bach rescue remedy as soon as the music starts. The opening music is so fitting and it gets me every time.I have to say theat when they had brought back the german prisoners, my heart was nearly in my throat, there was so much atmosphere in that room and i liked how it all went quiet when medic roe entered the room.
So, in the uk theres only 2 episodes left and i've nearly finished the book!
what will i do when it has finished???

Alexis,
I know how you feel. I'm in the US and it's over, last night was the first Sunday night without an episode of some kind...I made sure I was out of town and really preoccupied. Let me just reassure you that they let you down very gently and it's wonderfully done. ENJOY!!

I don't know what I'm going to do either when its
all finnished, I think I'll just crumple up n' cry
It's both exhilarating and exhausting just watching it, I've gone thro' every single human emotion whilst watching from afar.
...Whilst watching the 'Haguenau' episode, I noticed it differed from the book somewhat - on tv
leading the patrol to capture prisoners was Johnny
Martin, but in the book it was Ken Mercier, WHY
CHANGE IT?, also I note a replacement was killed
when he stepped on a 'Schu mine' - that wasn't
included either.....I realise they couldn't put
EVERYTHING from the book into the tv series, but
WHY change the Sergeant leading the patrol???..
I'm just curious!?

It's one of my favourites episodes(actually I love all of them!).I was just curious about where else I can see Ross Mccall.He is brilliant,very good as Joe Liebgott.I found him very attractive already in 1st episode!But anyway,"The Patrol" ends voice of Webster,who tells us about situation in US .People were having good fun,while young men were fighting,and dying for them.I think it's quite ironic.

Webster gets a less than warm welcome from 1st platoon.
David Kenyon Webster is the narrator in this ep.
Jackson, Earl McClung [Rocky Marshall], Edward ‘Babe’ Heffron [Robin Laing], Liebgott and Chuck Grant [Nolan Hemmings] wants to know what Web knows

Joe Liebgott [Ross McCall] promises to keep Web’s information confidential
Mal takes in shelling as an ordinary occurrence as Easy is stationed across the river from a German outpost
Web is definitely is removed from the rest of the men as he can’t see the humor in the situation

Mal gathers the men [Jackson, Heffron, Liebgott and Grant] to inform them that additional men will be assigned to the night patrol including the entire 2nd platoon
Heffron, Liebgott and Grant discuss the wisdom of having Malarkey lead the patrol
Web, Roy Cobb [Craig Heany], Liebgott, Johnny Martin [Dexter Fletcher], Jones and George Luz [Rick Gomez] welcome back Frank Perconte [James Madio] , who was wounded at Foy

Jane, OUTSTANDING once again. how do you do that?
Gold

A couple questions about this episode:
Webster was the one that set the explosives in the outpost right? I thought he might have been the one who tipped the boat, but who infact was in the boat that tipped?
Is there any particular reason why Cobb despises Webster?
Who was the guy that was going nuts and trying to kill the German prisoners when they got back from the patrol?
Who was the other soldier that asked Winters if he could join the patrol at the same time that Jones was asking?

Cobb tipped the boat, as far as i know.
don't know why Cobb despised Web, maybe because he was a 'college boy' and although they say he did a good fighting job, he never volunteerd for a mission/patrol/etc.
the guy going nuts would be Vest ('mailguy'), who desperately wanted to go on patrol.
that would be Vest again....
hope this helps,
irene

The men who were in the tipped boat were Sisk, Garcia and Cobb.
From what i heard, Cobb wasn't liked very much by the men of Easy, so that explains the way he acts toward the men. It wasn't just Webster. Did you see the way he looked and talked to Wynn when they were gathered waiting for Capt. Winters to brief them before the first patrol?
Yes, Irene is right. That was Vest who volunteered for the patrol and the one who went berserk seeing his one of his friends in agony.

Cobb has been discussed a couple of times on other boards. Here's a collection of posts exploring the topic. Except for the first message, all of them were written at the time the series first ran on HBO. Bmckenna and JohnOrloff are writers; the rest are posters. BK
~~~~MJAP - 4/23/02 8:23AM PDT (437 of 509)
This time around I found myself focused on Cobb. From the opening in the bar where he is outwardly nasty to the young Replacement about wearing the unit award, to his obvious reluctant mood in battle in Nuenen, his despair in the back of the truck (another trooper looping a pensive but supportive arm around his shoulder), then his reluctance and resignation when some of the men jump up from their safe position in the night to go back and look for Bull... Thinking through the rest of the series to The Patrol I am coming to conclude Cobb was somewhat of a misfit with the Company. He seemed to resist being in the brotherhood, for some reason.
becca_lynn - 05:54AM Oct 22, 2001 (259 of 1060)
BCM -- wonderful episode. I was dreading it without so many of our favorites. Malarky was particulary moving as he struggled to move forward after loosing so much. (Hats off to Scott Grimes -- very subtle performance.) Was the narration taken from Webster's book? I haven't read it yet. Special kudos to the patrol scenes. I do have one question -- was Cobb's "undoing" and court marshal cut from the episode? I'm confused on the timelime, but I thought it happened in Haganeau (sp??).
LuckyBruin - 07:23AM Oct 22, 2001 (262 of 1060)
becca,
They showed Cobb drunk in the episode. Is this where he was court martialed? If so, they did cut it, as I have not seen this play out yet.
becca_lynn - 07:41AM Oct 22, 2001 (263 of 1060)
LuckyBruin -- I won't describe the complete incident, but Cobb and another trooper (Wiseman maybe?) get drunk and disorderly. This incident isn't ingrained in my memory for some reason. That's the reason for my confusion. It could come later . . . I'll be checking my book when I get home from work to refresh my memory.
BCmckenna - 09:23AM Oct 22, 2001 (272 of 1060)
Becca --
I indeed had Cobb's arrest (Johnny Martin actually pulled a .45 on him). For some reason it got excised.
Katie212 - 10:20AM Oct 22, 2001 (278 of 1060)
BCMcK,
Kudos to the Band of Writers yet again. Thanks for the info re the Cobb incident. I wish they'd left it as you wrote it - it would have underscored the stress the men were under. As it was the scene didn't seem to go anywhere. Did you also have in the original script the men's concern about Winters studying the opposite bank right outside their OP and, in their view, possibly making them a target?
I particularly liked the scenes of the men joshing each other early on. Scott Grimes beautifully conveyed Malarkey's transition from the chirpy fellow of Episode 2 to an older-than-his-years veteran. Damian Lewis's scenes in this episode were the best I've seen so far.
I noticed a number of the men were crying when Jackson died. I wondered if that had its source in interviews with the men and if not, how the vets felt about it.
BCmckenna - 02:12PM Oct 22, 2001 (295 of 1060)
Indeed, there was a lot left out of this episode. Cobb's court martial; The wheezing German on the far bank (who Cobb killed). Some of the men did, in fact, cry when Jackson died. And it was a lot more horrible than what they filmed. He screamed and screamed and it unnerved everyone so much that they did, indeed try to beat up the German prisoners. Martin confessed to me that he lost it, as well.
As for Webster's relationship with the Company, that's a complex question. Webster's decision to remain a simple grunt, never volunteer -- his decision, as it were, to bear witness to the war -- didn't sit well with some members of the Company. He kept extensive journals (My version of the script had him writing in it), which provided deep insights into the war and the
men. And we certainly were informed by his book.
I thought the performance was a delicate one in the Episode and that it worked. He never went on the Patrol, by the way; he was stationed on the MG on the balcony of OP2 with...I can't remember.
Katie212 - 10:32AM Oct 23, 2001 (365 of 1060)
In an earlier post, BcMcKenna told us that Cobb's assault on an officer and hauling away for court-martial was in the script but didn't end up in the final ep. Looking at the way that scene ends with Cobb just taking a swig on the bottle, I would guess they actually shot the full scene and maybe edited out the attack for time reasons. It does seem to end a bit inconclusively with Martin's response to Cobb. If they did shoot it, we can hope for it on the DVD version. In this episode more than the others I get the sense that a lot of good stuff ended up on the editing room floor and it's a pity they didn't make it one of the extended episodes.
slogcush - 11:35PM Oct 23, 2001 (421 of 1060)
After viewing this latest episode, I reread the chapter in the book that dealt with the patrol. I was curious as to how accurate Cobb's portrayal was. I remember his character in 'Replacements' and how uncomfortable he made one of the new guys feel because he was wearing the unit citation even though he wasn't involved at Normandy. He seemed to have a sour disposition in that episode and I saw it again in 'The Last Patrol'. In the book, he did get court-martialed but I agreed with Col. Sink's comment to Lt. Foley who wrote up the paperwork on Cobb: "You should have shot him".
kiddtek - 07:53AM Oct 24, 2001 (430 of 1060)
I think Cobb is one of those characters that has changed a lot since Toccoa, even though you don't see very much of him. Maybe he's still mad about missing Normandy (wounded in the airplane before he could jump out). But like many of the men, their goal now is to just stay alive. Ambrose talks about the limited effectiveness of a combat soldier. Many of these man have already passed that point. Also interesting to note that Cobb had been in the Army for almost 11 years at this point. The actor looks much younger, but Cobb was definitely one of the "old timers" I don't know anything about his service record, but I'm also curious as to why he's still a Private. It doesn't make much for an Army career.
JohnOrloff - 10:12AM Oct 24, 2001 (442 of 1060)
Just to boast a bit about the details of this thing that people probably don't pick up .... If you look carefully in the night-drop on D-Day, you see/hear Cobb getting shot on Lipton's plane. It's hard to hear, but it is there!
BCmckenna - 10:40AM Oct 25, 2001 (541 of 1060)
re: JOHNNY MARTIN: Johnny is a really interesting guy. He's a bit of a loner compared to the other men, and he also has an extreme allergic reaction to authority. He's very independent. Even though he was born in Ohio, he really reminded me of a classic cowboy. Laconic. Strong. Gary Cooperish. He knew the Patrol was a waste, so he was NOT happy about going on it.
He also hated Cobb and pulled a pistol on him when Cobb was drunk. (If I recall, Blows were struck.)
tommcp - 11:41AM Oct 30, 2001 (1017 of 1060)
Does anyone know what the legal consequence was to Cobb after his court-martial? Was he just dishonorably discharged and shipped back to the States or did he have to serve a sentence in a stockade? It took about the 4th viewing for me to notice him in the background being placed into a jeep by several M.P.'s at the end of the episode right before Winters drives off. Did the fact that he was wounded in the plane over Normandy and fought in Holland and Bastogne mitigate his punishment? I don't recall the aftermath to the court-martial being discussed in the book.
~~~~~~~~~
As far as I know, no one has ever answer that question. BK

' It took about the 4th viewing for me to notice him in the background being placed into a jeep by several M.P.'s at the end of the episode right before Winters drives off. '
i haven't noticed that at all! gee now i HAVE to watch epi 8 again!
also, what question exactly, BK? there are so many...
anyway thanks for posting it, it was really interesting to read!
irene

Thanks for reposting that BK. Irene, i believe BK meant about the last question 'bout what happened after his court martial.
Took me a while to see him with the hand cuffs in ep 8 too; one has to look carefully to notice it.
gold

yeah but i've seen epi 8 about.......euh........25 times (seriously)....well i guess i was paying attention to a certain other character......you know who, Gold
irene

Hehe! I think i know who... ;) Have you seen Cobb in cuffs yet?
gold

not yet. been very busy. last night was epi 5. i appreciated it much more the second time around. CAN YOU BELIEVE LAST NIGHT WAS ONLY THE 2ND TIME I SAW IT? poor me....
but now i've got it on tape....
i will look for Cobb some time today...
irene

Oh goodie! At least now that you have the tapes, you can watch them over and over again! I am so excited cause BoB starts to re-air here tomorrow!!!
gold

gold; enjoy your 923587195681 time re-runs....
HEHE
i spotted Cobb at the end of epi 8 last night! you know, every time you watch an epi again and then 'discover' something new, i really feel like 'YEAH!'; the writers and the actors really made an effort to also have an interesting 'background'thing going on all the time...and the REAL fans see it all!
for instance; i noticed Webster being in the background trying to catch the camera SO OFTEN! like; epi 1 when the guys are playing basketball and Evans gives Winters his 'court martial paper' (misspelled court martial hehehehehe LOL
), in epi 4 right at the beginning at the cafe-scene, etc etc
irene

LOL! I definitely will enjoy!!
You're right Irene, even last night when i watched it re-aired on HBO, i found some things new that i've never noticed in my 923587195680th re-run! Hehe! Glad to check it out more and more!
gold

Gold, you are very lucky that they re-air BoB there in your country. Enjoy
They wont re-air it here and i feel myself so empty because i haven't even seen first four episodes.
I too always notice something new when i watch my tapes. For example i learn to know characters that i didn't know before. It was difficult to learn their names first times, because there are so many characters in BoB. And some of them look so similiar especially in episodes 6 and 7 when almost all of them have beard and moustaches
Iines

Iines, maybe this will help: I have actually emailed our HBO and requested to have BoB re-aired. I did it twice and twice they re-aired it. Why don't you try it? It's worth it.

Hi everyone,
One thing I particularly like about the episode is that Winters sees the futility in sending out another patrol, takes the reaponsibility into his own hands and cancels it. That was great! Someone had the guts to figure out that it was useless to waste more men on what looked like a rear guard action by the Germans. Well that's my opinion anyways. Hope everyone is well.
Steve.

I must try that, Gold! If it really could work here too, it would be great!
Steve,
Yes, Winters was absolutely right when he did that. I can't see the point why Sink wanted to get more german prisoners, when they already had two. I'm very happy that they didn't find out what Winters did
Iines

Iines; it definately works! i did it too....i've send about 5 emails and now they're re-airing it over here in Hollland!
HURRAY!
also, ask everyone you know to send an email too! the more, the better!
irene

Irene! Boy that was fast!!! Good luck and happy re-watching!
Steve, i am so with you on that! I love the look on the men's face when Capt. Winters was telling them "...good, cause ah..i want you all to have a full night sleep tonight, which means in the morning, you will report to me that you made it across the river into German lines, we're unable to secure live prisoners" And then Nixon supporting Winters' decision! I love that part!
gold

Irene,
Really? If it works in Philippines and in Holland, it must work here in Finland too
I sent my first e-mail yesterday.
Just shame that most my friends think i'm nuts because i like BoB
But maybe they can do this little service to me.
I keep fighting for BoB re-airing
Iines

Iines; good luck! remember to not stop emailing them! don't give up! isn't there a Finnish bob site or anything? if you can find one, ask everyone to join in and send emails to your tv station!
irene
ps if you give me their emailaddress, i will write one too and pretend to be from Finland, ok?
pps and i'm sure Gold will help you out too, won't you Gold??!

Sure thing. Anything to help a fellow BoB nut...er...fan! Just give me the link of the site and i'll see what i can do
gold

Gold & Irene,
Thanks very much!
I try to find some finnish BoB site tomorrow when i have more time. Here is my tv-station's emailaddress: riitta.pihlajamaki@yle.fi
But...how can you pretend to be finnish, can you speak it any more?
Thanks very very much again!!!
Iines

euuuhhhhmmm no i can't. you can email us (if i may speak for gold too) what to say. just send me (us) the text in finnish and then i'll copy it and send it via my email address....
irene

Can't they understand english too? I just sent my mail in english though. but if you prefer we email them in finnish then email me too...
duchess082980@yahoo.com
gold

gold, i'm sure they understand english, but then i don't think they'll believe we're from Finland! because why would finnish people send a mail in english? anyway Iines, just send me a copy of the email you send in Finnish and then i'll mail it to the tv station from my address....
irene

Oh well, i did send my email already so i just hope that will help...
gold *cross fingers*

I just checked my mail and i had a reply from that email address you gave us Iines. You wanna know what it says? Email me please...
That sure was a fast reply
gold

Sorry that i haven't answered earlier, it's been so busy
Gold,
Yes, fast reply really
Can you send their email to me? My emailaddress: iines-86@luukku.com.
Irene,
I will write that email soon today. I send it to you then. Please tell me did my email come to you, i'm not very good with these computers;)
And thanks so much you both!!
Iines

Gold, can you send other email to them finnish too? If you can, i send email to you soon too
Iiiines

Sure thing Iines. And i'll send you the email too. I saved it in case you wanted it.
gold

yeah and i too got your email today. wasn't sure that was the one you want me to send to them tho.....i found it to be rather euhhh short! but hey if that's the way you want it let me know then i'll send it right away!
irene

That was great, that they will re-air it sometimes! I just wonder, when i sent my mail to them, they didn't answer. I think i wrote the address wrong or something. In fact it was first times i used e-mail
Irene, is it really too short, well...i think you can still send it, i make my next email that i send them a little longer.
They gave me new hope to get BoB re-aired. Of course if they will do it not until next autumn, it's a bit too long time. But if i keep writing those emails, maybe they can re-air it earlier.
Iines

yeah maybe they can....i'll send the email for you this minute! hope it helps....i'll notify you when i get a reply...it's not like i can read what they say anyway....!
irene

Thanks very much! Remember that if either of you need help sometime with something like that, if you want some BoB-document re-aired or something, i'm ready to help
Iines

Did anyone else notice in the beginning of the episode when Webster was arriving in Haguenau, he stepped out of the jeep and the snow suddenly stopped? Pretty interesting.
John
