SCRIPT taken from Blue Team part 2 "Day Of Days" : CALL SHEET 10
(Friday May 12th 2000)
97 EXT. Trenches and ammo depot between cannon #2 and #3 -DAY

WINTERS grabs the bag of TNT, and bellies it into the next
leg of the trench. He crawls about 40 feet, and comes to a
widened-out part of the trench that is roofed over to form
an ammo depot. A slumped body is partially blocking the far
exit into the trenches.

It's Hall.

His body has taken a number of hits. One bullet has passed
through his face. A few flies have settled on the wound.
For the first time all day, WINTERS pauses.

He stares at Hall's face for a beat, brushes off the flies.
We HOLD on HALL'S face as a burst of nearby machine gun
fire forces WINTERS to hurry down the trench.

98 EXT. CANNON #3 - DAY

COMPTON and MALARKEY cover WINTERS as he stands and drops a
potato masher down the muzzle.

WINTERS
Fire in the hole!

As WINTERS hugs the ground below the cannon, he sees a
GERMAN radio. The voice of a GERMAN soldier is frantically
screaming through the receiver. It must be the GERMAN
spotter at Utah beach.

Next to the radio, WINTERS spots a case containing a field
map. WINTERS grabs the map, and looks at it -- it's marked
with all the German cannon positions for all of Normandy.
WINTERS almost can't believe it. Suddenly, there's an
increase of incoming machine gun fire and WINTERS looks up
just as --

Lt. SPIERS and FOUR D COMPANY MEN jump into the trench from
the hedgerow behind. They all have extra rounds of ammo on
them. SPIERS hunches next to Winters.

SPIERS
Hester said you need ammo!

WINTERS nods. SPIERS hardly looks at WINTERS -- he's much
more interested in the battle.

WINTERS
(pointing to ammo)
Malarkey! As much as you can.

MALARKEY overloads himself and heads back down the trench.
COMPTON reloads.

SPIERS
Mind if D Company takes a shot at
the next gun?

WINTERS gives SPIERS the once-over. There's something just
a bit off about SPIERS -- he seems to be enjoying the
"rush" of combat a little too much...

WINTERS
All yours!

SPIERS waits for a lull in the MG42 fire. As soon as he
hears one --

SPIERS
GO, GO, GO, GO, GO!

SPIERS and the FOUR D CO. MEN stand and charge down the
last leg of the trench. WINTERS watches as...

99 EXT. WINTERS' POV CANNON #4 FROM #3 -DAY

They start off all moving down the trenches together but
it's too slow for SPIERS. He leaps from the trench and --
followed by two of his MEN -- runs out in the open/

The TWO MEN are mowed down before SPIERS and the other TWO
MEN fight their way to the fourth cannon.

WINTERS and COMPTON watch, unimpressed with the gun-ho
tactics.

SPIERS hoses the emplacement with his Thompson, shooting
two of the GERMAN CREW in the trench, his TWO SURVIVING MEN
provide support. He then turns and shoots three more of the
fleeing GUN CREW in the back, but not before one of them
has hurled a potato masher back towards the cannon.

When the dust and smoke from the grenade settle, SPIERS
appears next to the cannon, giving the thumbs up to
WINTERS.

100 EXT. CANNON #3 - DAY

An exhausted LIPTON suddenly appears at his side, clutching
his bad of TNT.

LIPTON
We had trouble getting through
that first field. But I got the-
(notices the blown
breach)
-ah, heck!

WINTERS
They're gonna need it at the next
gun. Once it's blown, tell 'em to
pull out.

LIPTON doesn't look too convinced

LIPTON
Yes, sir.

LIPTON heads down the last leg of the trench.

WINTERS moves the opposite way with COMPTON towards CANNON
#2

101 EXT. CANNON #2 - DAY

LORRAINE and TOYE are still returning fire at the edge of
the trench.

WINTERS
Pull out!

They follow him down the trench to cannon #1

102 EXT. CANNON #1 - DAY

The two machine gunes manned by PETTY/LIEBGOTT and by
PLESHA/HENDRIX are still firing.

WINTERS
Okay! We're pulling out! MG's
first-- fall back to your
original positions! Everyone
else, maintain your base of fire!

The two machine gun crews start to break down their
weapons, and then high-tall it out of there while the rest
of the men give them cover.

WINTERS (CONT'D)
Okay! Back to battalion! Go! Go!
Go! Go!

The rest of the men jump out of the trench, leaving WINTERS
alone. He double checks that the cannon is useless, and is
about to jump out himself, when he sees a WOUNDED GERMAN at
the end of the trench to hoist an MG42 into a firing
position so he can shoot at the retreating Americans.

WINTERS lets off a single shot, hitting the GERMAN in the
head.

WINTERS jumps out of the trench and, hunched over, runs as
fast as he can through the field.

88 EXT. TRASH DUMP - HEDGEROW - DAY

WYNN is slowly crawling back toward Le Grand Chemin. He
moans in pain every time he moves.

WYNN
God...damn...it...

Bullets whizz by about two feet above the ground. As he
pulls his way through the trash dump in the hedgerow he
sees LIPTON and RANNEY heading his way.

LIPTON and RANNEY move to him as fast as they can through
the near constant firing.

LIPTON
You hit bad?

WYNN
Not sure!

LIPTON
Let me see.

WYNN drags himself alongside LIPTON, who looks at WYNN'S
blood soaked rear.

LIPTON (CONT'D)
Ouch!

90 EXT. MEADOW - DAY

LIPTON AND RANNEY are on their bellies, sliding through the
grass and bushes. LIPTON'S dragging his mussette bag with
him. An intense amount of bullets whiz by overhead.

Behind LIPTON, a warrant officer named HILL crawls up,
touches LIPTON'S boot --

HILL
Hey! Where's regimental HQ?

LIPTON gives him a how the hell did you get here? look.

LIPTON
You're kidding me?
(looks at HILL)
You're not kidding me! Back that
a-ways!

HILL nods, raises his head to look back, and is shot
through the side of the head. His ear blossoms with the
exit wound, and he's dead. LIPTON looks at him for a beat,
then over at RANNEY. RANNEY Shakes his head.

LIPTON
Jesus...

LIPTON then continues his crawl away towards cannon #1
Mumbling to himself.

105 INT. TRUCK - NIGHT

The men of Easy (basically all the men who assaulted the
105's) are sitting and lying around inside the truck,
smoking and talking. Some sleep as best they can.

A small brassier has been made out of a ten gallon oil drum
and the MEN are heating up their pooled K rations. A
liberated bottle of Calvados is being passed around. They
are tired and exhausted but they lived through their first
day of battle.

When WINTERS appears the banter stops.

WINTERS
Evening.

The MEN reply. The situation is slightly awkward.

LIEBGOTT
(Offering bottle)
Want some Sir?

GUARNERE
The Lieutenant don't drink,
Liebgott.

WINTERS takes the bottle from LIEBGOTT. HE lets the hint of
a smile break his face as he looks as GUARNERE.

WINTERS
It's been a day of firsts.
Wouldn't you say Guarnere?

He takes a long swig. GUARNERE smiles back.

GUARNERE
Yes sir.

WINTERS hands the bottle to GUARNERE, steps away, then
pauses.

WINTERS
And sergeant Guarnere...

GUARNERE
Sir?

WINTERS
I'm not a Quaker.

WINTERS walks away. GUARNERE gets some shit from the other
MEN.

GUARNERE
What? He's from Lancaster County.
Maybe he's a Mennonite for
Chrissakes!
