Boomtown

Forget the Hollywood hype. Ignore the sunny façade. Step onto the real streets of Los Angeles with the cops and paramedics who roam them. Emmy-winning writer Graham Yost ( From The Earth to The Moon, Band of Brothers) creates a life-and-death beat filled with characters as diverse and thrilling as the City of Angels. In addition to a philandering District Attorney and his lover, an ambitious local reporter, are L.A.'s unsung heroes: Detectives Fearless (Mykelti Williamson, Ali) and Joel (Donnie Wahlberg, Band of Brothers), cops Turcotte (Jason Gedrick, Murder One) and Hechler (Gary Basaraba, Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Cycle) and medic Theresa. The action (and there's plenty) unravels backwards and forwards, "Pulp Fiction" style, with each new time frame offering a fresh perspective on both sides of the law and unique insight into what makes these people — and this city — tick.

Donnie Wahlberg (Joel Sears), Mykelti Williamson (Fearless Bobby Smith), Jason Gedrick (Tom Turcotte), Gary Basaraba (Ray Hechler), Lana Parilla (Theresa Ortiz), Nina Garbiras (Andrea Little), Neal McDonough (David McNorris)

British Actor Goes on 'Agency' Duty
Jun 28, 2002

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Band of Brothers co-star Jason O'Mara will be part of "The Agency" on CBS this fall

The British actor joins the cast in the wake of Gil Bellows' departure from the drama set in the CIA following the first season. He won't be replacing Bellows' character, however. Instead, O'Mara will play A.B. Stiles, the leader of the CIA's incident response teams -- agents called on for the toughest assignments.

"What the A.B. stands for will remain a mystery for a while," says executive producer Shaun Cassidy

O'Mara played 1st Lt. Thomas Meehan in HBO's World War II miniseries Band of Brothers and has also appeared in several British series. He also had a role in the FOX pilot "Eastwick," which wasn't picked up but resulted in several offers for other parts.

He ended up choosing "The Agency" over another CBS drama, the new series "Presidio Med."

"The Agency" averaged about 10 million viewers a week last season in the same timeslot as NBC's "ER." It will move to 10 p.m. Saturdays in
the fall.

Boomtown is all in the telling

By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY
07/22/2002

LOS ANGELES — In a fall season where too many shows already look to be a bust, one series at least is opening with a bang.

Wahlberg-USA Today
NBC's new cop drama stars former New Kid Donnie Wahlberg, left.

Produced by two Hollywood heavy hitters, writer Graham Yost (Speed, Band of Brothers) and director Jon Avnet (Fried Green Tomatoes, Uprising), NBC's L.A.-set cop show Boomtown is one of the few new series to have generated anything akin to the preseason excitement that greeted 24 last year.

Innovatively structured and stylishly shot, Boomtown takes a crime and examines it from the varying points of view of the people the crime affects.

The result, in the complex but not confusing pilot, is a show that seamlessly shifts from place to place and person to person, and back and forth in time. While telling its well-crafted story, Boomtown also efficiently introduces us to the large cast whose points of view we'll be following — including Donnie Wahlberg and Mykelti Williamson as detectives, Gary Basaraba and Jason Gedrick as cops, Neal McDonough as a district attorney, Nina Garbiras as a reporter and Lana Parrilla as a paramedic.

Curiously for a show that seems so strikingly modern and so tied to Los Angeles, Boomtownwas born on a World War II French battlefield. While working on HBO's Band — which earned him an Emmy nomination last week — Yost realized that the veterans he interviewed had all given him different versions of a battle.

"I thought, what if I told one person's point of view of their whole experience of the battle, and then you see someone else's experience of the battle, and let the audience take these real and subjective viewpoints and put them all together?" Yost says.

Actually, Avnet has a different theory on the complicated show's genesis: "You want to know the real reason the form came like this? When Graham was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck."

While Yost's Rashomon-influenced idea didn't work for Band, it seemed ready-made for a crime show. He did, however, retain two other Band connections: McDonough and Wahlberg (the only actor whose part was specifically written for him).

Avnet, who worked with NBC on Uprising, was sent the script and thought it was "extraordinary."

"It was kind of fun and kind of challenging," he says. "I think it's going to suggest some interesting stylistic things we haven't seen."

Getting NBC's support for an innovative storytelling style in a season that seems to be heading back to safer basics was easier than you might think, Yost says. West Wing often goes back and forth in time, and ER opened last season with its own fractured point-of-view drama. Of course, doing a whole series in that style is a lot harder than doing one episode. "Believe me," Yost says, "I'm finding that out."

The key, both producers say, is to jump to another character's viewpoint only when there's a clear purpose for the move. "You need enough narrative material to make the next view satisfying," Avnet says. "It has to push the story forward, so if you're seeing the same event, you're not simply hearing the same words with the camera in a different position."

As the pilot's director, Avnet had to make sure the jumps were both visceral and clear, so that an audience could follow the puzzle without getting lost. His solution was a dreamlike, color-bleached fade that signals a switch in time or perspective — a style designed to serve the substance.

"The purpose of pushing the envelope is very singular: It's to tell the story in the best possible way. It's not to show the muscle of a director, or a cameraman or a writer, in terms of being stylish for the mere sake of being stylish," Avnet says. "We have a conservative nature, and the conservative leans toward telling the story."

There are other conservative elements in Boomtown. The plot is relatively simple and completely self-contained. Neither the producers nor NBC, Yost says, wanted a serialized show. And like Law & Order (Boomtown airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, after Law & Order: Criminal Intent), the show is heavily formatted, and the ensemble has to fit itself into the format.

Still, as impressively as the gambit works in the pilot, duplicating that success on a weekly basis won't be easy. The job could be even more complicated because Avnet, who will direct the first two episodes, is committed to the show through only the first 13. Whether he'll continue after that, he says, "I don't know."

"Frankly," Avnet adds, "I would never have imagined that I would do this. Graham's an employable writer and I'm an employable director. What I've tried to do is make my life available to do this show and get it off."

Of course, every new show is a risk — particularly one entering a crowded field. Boomtown will compete for attention with three other L.A.-based cop shows: CBS' Robbery Homicide Division, Fox's Fastlane and ABC's planned midseason revival of Dragnet. "I thought we were ahead of the curve," Yost says, "and we're right smack dab in the middle."

Still, Avnet says, "what matters is, whatever we put on we're proud of. If we do that, then you take your good news and your bad news."

Yost says, "We're just happy to be at the party, especially with an odd-duck show."

O'Mera - The Agency
INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY ''Band of Brothers''' O'Mara turns G-man

RETURNING SHOW
CBS 10-11 PM STARTS SEPT. 28

Although ''The Agency'''s original directive was to depict the sleuthing techniques of America's premiere intelligence operation, for a while there behind-the-scenes turmoil at the CBS drama was giving off more of a Keystone Kops vibe. Last May, the series lead G-man, Gil Bellows, was suddenly axed (CBS found Bellows' portrayal too cerebral and had his character, Matt Callan, knocked off), while the drama itself (which the Eye's suits felt lacked enough action or heroism) was whisked back to headquarters for an overhaul. Now the show, having been reassigned to Saturday night, is looking to embrace its inner Jack Ryan.

''We'll have characters who will go out into the field, kick some ass, and do what we all secretly want the CIA to do,'' says CBS senior VP of current programming David Stapf.

Bellows' replacement? Studly Irish actor Jason O'Mara (''Band of Brothers''as Thomas Meehan), who plays elite soldier turned spy guy A.B. Stiles. Stiles will not only crank up the action -- he's an expert in several kinds of combat and can even pull off a mean underwater rescue! -- he also turns up the heat: He beds field operative Terri Lowell (Paige Turco) in the first episode after successfully tracking Callan's killer.

''I have to pinch myself,'' says O'Mara. ''I'm playing the kind of character I've loved since I was a kid. It's classic leading-man stuff.'' CBS seconds that. ''Jason is reminiscent of a young Steve McQueen,'' says Stapf. ''Men want to be him and women just want him.''

In other undercover ops, CIA director Tom Gage (Beau Bridges) tries to hide his desire for Avery Pohl (Lolita Davidovich), a former colleague who reenters his life as an FBI agent. Work presents its own struggles for Gage, who took over after Director Alex Pierce (Ronny Cox) resigned in disgrace last season. An operation involving the CIA, FBI, and INS goes wrong in the premiere because none of them know what the others are doing (sound familiar?). Stiles faces another hairy dilemma in episode 2, when his plane is hijacked and the CIA considers shooting it down. ''In these post-9/11 days, everyone assumes its terrorism, but it's not. It's an old-fashioned disgruntled employee,'' says creator/exec producer Shaun Cassidy.

After 9/11, CBS worried that Americans would be disgruntled with a drama featuring terrorist attacks and international bad guys, but Cassidy is more determined than ever to keep true to the show's battle plan. ''Either we cancel 'The Agency' or do the show we originally envisioned,'' says Cassidy. ''It ended up being more of a documentary than anybody ever imagined.''

Another big surprise: ''The Agency'' finished the season as the most watched spy series (10.3 million viewers), ahead of the more critically acclaimed series ''Alias'' and ''24'' (9.7 million and 8.6 million, respectively). And although the move to low-profile Saturday must be a bit of a kick in the gut to the troops, they're staying positive and focusing on the dearth of competition on that night. Or as Cassidy puts it: ''Saturdays are homeland security personified.''

Thanks!! The reviews among Bamber fans is this production is….let’s just say no one would confuse UF with being a spinoff of BOB, LOL!!! :O Yet I hear last night’s ep was the best one yet [for Bamber lovers anyway].

‘Dotsy Doheny’ makes me think of a surfer guy….while Jamie could certainly pass as one with the blonde hair and athletic build….I like him just fine as a talented Brit actor.

Are you anywhere near the Ol’ Vic Theatre in Bristol? Jamie will begin playing Prince Hal in Henry IV starting Oct. 11th. That I would love to see….

Thanks, Gary. the only thing new that I can offer at this point is my opinion on the acting. I think that Dexter Fletcher, did an outstanding job, perhaps the best, in my opinion only. I know that Bill Guanere's phone number is listed, but I wouldn't call him myself. I wouldn't wanna bother the man. There are a lot of veterans from WW II in my town which is near Syracuse NY. This town is where the Boxing Hall of Fame is and CArmen Basilio is one of the better known fighters here. I know that you can rent the mini series at Video King. I have it taped on VHS, believe it or not, I don't own a VCR. Also, I spent last night reading through some of the posts and I must that all of you strike me as exceptionally bright and well versed on this series. I thank you for allowing me to be a part of this group. You can email me at BrianT11@aol.com if anyone chooses to. Thank you all for that warm reception. I tend to sometimes go off on a tangent, so please bear with me, which is a polite of way saying that it's hard to shut me up. LOL
Watching the mini series, I cannot help but being struck by a sense of awe at what these men did. I think all of us wonder, at one point, if we would have the courage to do what those men did, but none of us can really comprehend what it was like to go through battle. We try to live our lives the best way we can and do what is right. And yet when I watch the series, I often become so engrossed that I feel as if I'm really there. You can almost sense that you know those men, so much so that walking up to one of them would seem as if you are greeting an old friend. Yet, we are mere bystanders, but as bystanders who have never witnessed what the men of Easy Company did, we can offer up our respect and our thanks for the courage that these men had. What greater gift can someone give but to lay down his life for others. As WB Yeats once wrote "Those I fight I do not hate. Those I defend, I do not love." There is a symbolism there where ordinary men do extraordinary things and yet seem completely unaware of what they did. If modesty be the hallmark of heroes, then paying them homage is but a small return in which we can bestow upon them. We live in a world now changed by the threats of terrorism and we can only hope that there are men and women, maybe ourselves, who will display the same courage as the men of Easy Company.
It might be a fitting homage if, at some point we could all get together and make a video presentation, a sort Tribute To Easy Company and send it to them I'd be happy to arrange such an event here in Canastota.

It is also cool to see the 'brothers' cast members working together again; Matthew "Talbert" Leitch and Dexter "Martin" Fletcher (Below), Matthew "Talbert" Leitch and Peter "Shifty" Youngblood Hills (A.K.A), Damian "Winters" Lewis and Donnie "Lipton" Wahlberg (Dreamcatcher), Phil "Strayer" McKee, Tim "Penkala" Matthews, Adam "Petty" James and George "'Moe' Alley" Calil (The Lost Battalion), Stephen "Heyliger" McCole and Nolan "Grant Hemmings (Last Orders) and of course there is Donnie "Lipton" Wahlberg and Neal "Compton" McDonough on "Boomtown" and Jason "Meehan" O'Mara and Richard "Muck" Speight Jnr on "The Agency". Damian and Donnie will be appearing in the film version of the Stephen King novel "Dreamcatcher". Here is the plot outline from imdb.com:
"Four boyhood pals in Derry, Maine, get together for a pilgrimage to their favorite deep-woods cabin, Hole in the Wall. They've all got midlife crises: clownish Beav has love problems; the intellectual shrink, Henry, is slowly succumbing to the siren song of suicide; Pete is losing a war with beer; Jonesy has had weird premonitions ever since he got hit by a car. Having arrived at Hole in the Wall they meet a mysterious stranger and all hell breaks loose...they are overtaken by a blizzard, a vicious storm in which something much more ominous moves. Challenged to stop an alien force, the friends must first prevent the slaughter of innocent civilians by a military vigilante, then overcome a threat to the bond between them. In the end, they confront an unparalleled horror, with the fate of the world in the balance."

Damian Lewis is going to play Jonesy and Donnie will be playing Douglas *the mysterious stranger*.
The film will be released in the States on April 4th next year, then in the Uk on the 25th.

The official movie site is: http://dreamcatchermovie.warnerbros.com/ and there is a trailer and a few "behind the scenes" things featuring both of the boys.

Thus, Sherri, Katrina, Tree and I (various webmasters
of various sites) have gotten together and put
together this webpage (with a link to the petition we
will be sending to NBC) so please go here:

{http://www.saveboomtown.com, Save Boomtown}

And follow as many if not all of the suggestions about
how to Save Boomtown!
(This is a work in progress so we will be adding more
later, so please keep checking back!)

We also ask that you NOT watch the repeat of L&O:SVU
this Friday..if it gets good ratings there, NBC will
have no reason to bring back Boomtown!
Please goto our site, sign our petition and do as many
things as you can to help save this wonderful show!

Hey everyone.
I know this Convo box is about projects that the actors had AFTER band of brothers, but ive got a few bits of information on some projects the actors did BEFORE. Richard Speight JR (Muck) played a 2 second part as a lifegaurd in "Speed 2", and has also lately played a large roll in an advertisment for IMB, a computer software company. John Frank Hughes who plays "Wild Bill Guarnere" was in "Catch me if you can" with Tom hanks and Leonardo Di Caprio. Micheal Cudlitz who plays " Denver Bull Randlemen" was in "Mighty Ducks 3" at a young age. I can't remember the name of the actor, but his character is Alton More, played a large roll in Eastenders, a UK soap opera. Neil McDonough, like featured above is in boomtown and also played a roll of medium importance in Minority Report. Damien Lewis (Dick winters) was in an impressionist show as an Evil Publisher in the UK and the "Forsyte Sage" and also played the part of "Jeffrey Archer" a UK Polition who was jailed. Ron Livingston played a part for about 6 episodes in sex and the city. James Madio who plays Frank perconte was in a teen sitcom called "USA high" and was also is "Blood Brothers". Scott grimes who plays Don malarky has a steady roll in Hospital drama ER. Donnie Wahlberg (Carwood lipton) is also in Boomtown. Dale Dye also played a small part in Saving private ryan (with i'd like to point out, lack of moustache, hehe). Colin hanks' most famous rolls include a film called "Get over it" where he plays an overprotective brother of Kirsten Dunst, and also in Orange County. David Schwimmer as everyone knows plays Ross in Freinds. And last but not least (in terms of what i know personally) Matther Leitch who plays Floyd Talbet has been featured in a series of adds for Citreon cars and also was followed round the streets of london in an Advert Advertising a new sports Newspaper.
