From the HBO message board posted by Bruce McKenna (writer for Ep. 6)...

"BCmckenna - 11:28PM Oct 07, 2001 (1153 of 2911)
... Indeed I did take (and so did the Director) some liberties from the truth, but Renee, the Belgian Nurse is not one of them. Nor is the Black Nurse from the Congo (no one could remember her name).

"Renee was an 18 yr old who helped in one of the aid stations. I talked to two medico types, a Medical Technician and a surgeon who interacted with her. She was more effective calming down the injured men than treating their wounds; in reality it was the Congolese nurse who was bloody up to her elbows.

"But nevertheless both men told me they wept when Renee was killed during the Christmas (early morning) bombing of Bastogne.

"I was told by Ralph Spina that Roe indeed went back to Bastogne for supplies because they had no aide station. It is entirely probable that he met with Renee. In fact he couldn't have avoided her.

"So, really, the only liberty was an imaginary interaction that may have, in fact, happened. BCM"
