Swindon actor aims high

Lawrence
Mark Lawrence as Bill Dukeman in Band of Brothers.

Swindon actor Mark Lawrence recently starred in BBC2’s epic wartime mini-series Band of Brothers.

He explains what led up to his role as real life soldier Bill Dukeman and his future ambitions.

Born and bred in Swindon, Mark, 31, attended Dorcan School and says becoming an actor had possibly always been his destiny.

It seemed, like many actors, he was an attention-seeker from an early age.

"I wasn’t very academic at school", he said, "I tended to be the class idiot! It was the only thing I was good at."

Early jobs included a stint at Swindon’s Rover car factory as well as a window-cleaning round before Mark decided to fulfil his ambition to tread the boards.

He saved all his money and headed for New York where after a successful audition he enrolled in the world-renowned Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.

Strasberg is famous for developing the ‘Method’ style of acting in which an actor immerses themselves in the role to such a degree that they almost live the part.

Devotees of this technique include heavyweight thespians such as Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro who were previous students of Strasberg.

Unsurprisingly these actors were an early inspiration for Mark and he felt that the only way to pursue his dream was to follow in their footsteps at the Institute.

He emerged 18 months later and swiftly appeared in a number of student films at the New York University.

Possibly one of his most unusual roles around this time included playing a man who fell in love with a water melon! This culminated in a scene where had to simulate a love scene with the melon in Washington Square Park in broad daylight!

This led onto further parts in off-Broadway productions such as Eugene O’Neills’ Long Day’s Journey into Night.

On his return to the UK he secured an agent and began to pick up minor television roles in Channel 5 soap Family Affairs, The Bill and as a rapist in a Crimewatch reconstruction.

It was an unsuccessful audition for Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan that eventually led to Mark winning the role of William Dukeman in Band of Brothers.

This 10 part mini-series was based on Stephen Ambrose’s non fiction novel about the coming of age of a World War II US army unit, Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.

It went on to become one of the most ambitious and expensive productions ever attempted for the small screen and was executive-produced by Steven Spielberg.

Two-time Academy Award winning actor Tom Hanks and the man dubbed ‘the most powerful actor in Hollywood’ was one of the directors on the series and was the man responsible for casting Mark in the series.

Mark said "finally meeting Tom was a bit nerve-wracking. I walked in and didn’t recognise him at first as he had been filming Castaway and still had a great big beard.

After I read for him he said ‘that’s great, just get out’, I didn’t know how to take that at first but he then went on to offer me the part".

Filming began in April 2000 at Hatfield Aerodrome in Hertfordshire.

The size of the production was somewhat overwhelming for Mark.

"It was the biggest production I’m ever likely to see in my life", he said.

The actors were required to prepare for their soldierly roles by attending a Boot Camp for 10 days which entailed sleeping in barracks, going on late-night manoeuvres and being ‘punished’ with rounds of press-ups!

"We got shouted at every day by real ex-marines but it was amazing. It created a real bond among the principle cast", Mark said.

Marks’ character Bill Dukeman was killed in September 1944 during Operation Market Garden in Holland.

This was an aborted attempt by the 101st Airborne Division to secure bridges across the Dutch rivers in Holland to enable the Allied army to advance into the lowlands of Germany.

Mark got the chance to meet Bill Dukeman’s family at the premiere of Band of Brothers which took place on the anniversary of D-Day on June 6th 2001 at the Utah Beach Memorial in Normandy.

He was heartened to receive their blessing and appreciation for his portrayal of the tragic soldier.

He said "they were happy that one of their relatives was shown in a heroic light".

Since the series finished a month ago, Mark has been pleasantly surprised to receive plaudits from members of the public who admired his work in the series.

He recently received his first letter requesting an autograph from a young fan from Swansea.

"That was really nice" he said.

As well as Band of Brothers, Mark has also been seen working alongside Julie Walters in the recent ITV drama My Beautiful Son.

Although he has many projects in the pipeline for 2002, Mark said that if he had the chance he would most like to work with Brit directors like Ken Loach and Mike Leigh, famed for their gritty ‘kitchen-sink’ suburban films. However, on the flipside he would love to appear in a big American western!

Regardless of what his future may hold Mark is philosophical about his Band of Brothers experience.

He said, "It was an amazing experience for me, in terms of the size of the production possibly something that I’ll never get the chance to repeat again. It’s going to be hard to top it."

I heard on one of the boards that he was in the episode "Crossroads" because that is the episode that he directed also. But I am not sure exactly where he is, maybe in the Operation Market Garden scene when Martin tells the driver of the "British" tank that the tiger tank is right around the corner & then they end up getting hit by it?? I know he is not the driver but maybe he is one of the soldiers on the ground following the tank??

Tom Hanks has a cameo role, non-speaking. He's standing in the first tank coming into the square in Eindhoven in Replacements, Episode 4. He's wearing a leather skullcap as tankers do, but he's standing and gesturing to the crowd. No close-ups -- you'll have to look closely and you can see the body language. Babe Heffron is in the same scene there in the square. BK

He goes downstairs to greet her and when they come up, the three friends are stood with nothing but skirts on vacuumning pretending they're gay, giving the girl the mipression that he is too, fantastic!)Seriously though well acted. Also, a few years ago, he played MathsMan, a maths superhero who is on at around 11:30GMT on BBC2, helping Kids with maths questions. I had a day off and was flicking over the channels when I suddenly said "Roy Cobb!" and couldn't believe it! He flies around the world a la Superman saving children with Maths homework problems! Iines,
To answer your question from October, when I was with the Canadian Military a few years back a bunch of us had a chance to take the Airborne jump course in Edmonton, Alberta. Let me tell you I've never had to do so much running and pushups in my entire life. But it was worth it because in our last week there we jumped, and boy was it great! The only thing that hurt was the landing, because the ground was frozen{middle of february} and also always remember try not to land when you are going with the wind, as one can pick up speed and end up doing a feet, knees, face landing, then be dragged for a bit!! Tends to bruise the ego!!LOL.
Anyways have a good one,
Steve L.

Tom Hanks is in ep 9 "Why We Fight". When they are riding in the trucks they pass a house and a guy drags some Germans out of a house and shoots them. The guy shooting the Germans is Tom Hanks.

Steve,
Really, that's great! Yes, jumping sounds so interesting, i would really like to try it but...it must be relly frightening to see how high you are. I think i'd just stop right there and someone should push me to sky:)
Did you jump from plane? And how high did you do it? Was you frightened??

Am I going over the top? For Christmas, I got The BoB soundtrack (track 2 makes the hairs at the back of my neck stand on end!), I bought the DVD a month a go, the video with it, the book, in paperback and hardback, letter from Wild Bill Guarnere, all I need now is a poster, o any Brits know where I can get one not on the net?

Hi lee, you are not going overboard. My opinion is that you can't have enough of a thing you love.
If this reassures here is a list of the things I've got. I have the book, paperback, in english, looking for the Dutch, a BoB calender, soundtrack, dvd, all episodes on video, scrabbook, mousepad, poster, second is on his way, and last, but not least, pictures of Bill and Babe in Eindhoven. You are only half way.
Greets, Anita.

Erin,

Does anyone know anything about Tim Matthews, who played Alex Penkala. I was very impressed by both him and his character, found myself wanting to know more.

Thanks

Erin

One of the things I love about Band Of Brothers is that you don't need to watch the series over and over again to see the actors in the series (although that hasn't stopped most of us! lol.)
Despite the fact that most of the actors in the series are reletively unknowns they seem to be popping up everywhere I turn: on t.v shows, movies, awards ceremonies etc.
I guess that's another bonus of have a huge cast!!! :)
