Here's the rest of the story:
~~~~~~~~
Veterans Day Tribute Offers the Public a Chance to Spend Day with Men Who Made History -- World War II Magazine brings Airborne authors and 'Band of Brothers' veterans together for an all-day salute and symposium on Saturday, November 9, in Washington, D.C.
Offering a unique opportunity for the public to meet and ask questions of the men who made history, World War II Magazine's Veterans Day Tribute brings together one of the most impressive lineups ever for a history-related event. The program includes seven World War II Airborne veterans who have authored books on their wartime experiences, three Easy Company veterans of "Band of Brothers" fame and noted historians for an all-day symposium and book signing ceremony at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center.
Honoring the 82nd, 101st and 17th Airborne Divisions in World War II, the tribute will be the largest gathering of Airborne veteran/authors ever. "I have spoken at a number of public gatherings over the years and the lineup for this one is, by far, the best I have ever seen. I am very happy to be a part of this program," said Donald Burgett, author of four books: Currahee, Seven Roads to Hell, Road to Arnhem and Beyond the Rhine.
In addition to the authors, three veterans of E Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment--who participated in the D-Day invasion, Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge--will be on the program. Lynn D. "Buck" Compton, Forrest L. Guth, and Donald G. Malarkey will each speak on their experiences in some of the most critical battles of World War II. Their story was made famous in the best-selling book by historian Stephen E. Ambrose, Band of Brothers, and in the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries of the same name.
"What better way to mark Veterans Day than by spending a day with men who in their youth some 60 years ago were risking their lives and futures for their country and world," said World War II Magazine editor and symposium organizer Chris Anderson. "These men are all true heroes and will tell the unvarnished truth of their experience in war."
Among the featured speakers are four 101st Airborne veterans, Burgett, Joseph Beyrle, author of The Simple Sounds of Freedom; Robert Bowen, who wrote Fighting with the Screaming Eagles; and George Koskimaki, author of D-Day With the Screaming Eagles, Hell's Highway and The Battered Bastards of Bastogne.
Representing the 82nd Airborne are T. Moffatt Burriss, author of Strike and Hold, and John McKenzie, whose book is On Time, On Target. Bob Hagerman, 17th Airborne veteran is the author of three books: Granddaddy was Airborne, War Stories, and History of the 17th Airborne Division.
Along with Anderson, moderating and introducing speakers at the event will be noted historians Williamson Murray, author of a number of books on World War II, including A War to Be Won, and Ronald Drez, author of 25 Yards of War.
"We are delighted to be able to bring to the nation's capital such a distinguished lineup of World War II veterans and provide the public an opportunity to hear their riveting and important stories firsthand," said Roger L. Vance, editorial director for World War II and nine other magazines of the Primedia History Group. "It promises to be an inspiring day for young and old alike."
Doors open at 9 a.m. and all of the authors will be available during the day to sign copies of their books, which will be sold on site. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for students (children under eight free) and can be ordered in advance by calling (800) 282-0319. More information is available online at www.TheHistoryNet.com.
If you have never visited the Currahee site, please take a trip through the photos and history of the WWII guys. And when you're finished, have a look at the stories of the men who followed in their footsteps, preserving a legacy that continues today.
http://currahee.hispeed.com/index.htm -- Joseph Beyrle is the 101st paratrooper whose story is told in "The Simple Sounds of Freedom". Beyrle jumped in Normandy and was captured, and escaped and was recaptured and escaped yet again and finally was recaptured and so was a POW until the end of the war. It's a harrowing story.
Take some time in that site and learn some more about those guys who fought on either side of our Easy Company men.
There's so much to know. BK
