Easy Company Medic Eugene Roe: Easy Company: James L “Punchy” Diel
Jimmy “Punchy” Diel was an original member of Company E, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment joining the outfit at Camp Toccoa, Georgia in 1942. Mr. Diel was the platoon Sergeant for 2nd Platoon and was made E Company First Sergeant while fighting in Normandy.
Mr. Diel was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in August of 1944 and assigned as an assistant platoon leader with Company A of the 1st Battalion of the 506th PIR. He was killed in action leading an attack at the Son Bridge on September 19, 1944. He was originally from Illinois.
